A sanctuary, a place for rest and contemplation, a reflection of years of art and style – Israeli fashion designer Elie Tahari entrusted The Turett Collaborative with the job of designing a home for himself and children on Central Park West, in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. Actually two residential units combined, the home occupies a full floor of one of the most exclusive apartment buildings in NYC.
Elie Tahari debuted in 1978 at Studio 54 in New York, presenting his first dress collection. Today his label sells all over the world. More than 40 years since he embarked on his fashion career, the designer is celebrating his New York beginnings – where his company is still headquartered – with his new home.
“We were happy to partner with such a respected fashion designer who works with different communication media than ours. For us, a project is successful when clients feel that they designed it themselves. By combining our experience in architecture with Elie’s in fashion, we created a linear space with a Zen atmosphere. The home lets Elia live his own lifestyle and reflects his tastes through the furnishings, works of art, and materials chosen for the project”.

As a lover of greenery and nature, Elie Tahari chose a property with a huge terrace that overlooks Columbus Circle and the cityscape. He commissioned Swiss landscape artist Enzo Enea to work with the team from The Turett Collaborative to create a secret garden. This space includes five seating areas with abundant greenery and is accessed from multiple openings off the apartment.
“My home makes me feel as if I were in the countryside, in the middle of nature”, says Tahari. “It’s a sanctuary from the city in the city”. The terrace and the abundant windows in the residence – which faces south, east, and west – make it possible to maximize the amount of natural light inside, and create a direct connection between indoors and out.
“Situated between Columbus Circle and Central Park, the apartment is in an excellent location. This was fundamental for the client, who has a deep connection with New York. He wanted the home to have the best views of the park possible, and we’ve responded to this with large windows and a vast terrace that surrounds the apartment”.

Each section of this luxurious apartment has a touch of uniqueness created by custom-made furniture, and elegant finishes that add a feeling of unity and harmony. The elevator hall, the first space you encounter when you step inside, is flanked by two solid walnut pivot doors made from wood repurposed from what were tables in a Tahari showroom. To the right is the living room, which overlooks the huge terrace. To the left is access to a separate area with the designer’s home studio.
The large and airy living area of the home includes the living room, kitchen, and dining room, which features a custom-designed table by Claude Missir. The designers also included a scrim that can be lowered to partition off the kitchen, ideal when hosting guests.
With light, neutral tones, mid-century furniture, and iconic design pieces, a bar forms a buffer between the dining and living rooms. A bespoke sofa by Vladamir Kagan, purchased at Phillips Auction House, is the centerpiece, positioned under a specially created work by artist Lindsay Adelman. Conceived as a small art gallery right down to its colors, the apartment has paintings by James Narez and Yigal Ozeri, and a sculpture by Max Pelzman.
At the end of the living room is the entrance to the night area with its three bedrooms. Each room has an en suite bathroom and a different atmosphere, reflecting the personality of the family member occupant. Both the living room and bedrooms have parquet flooring, while the bathrooms are finished in local Imperial Danby marble. Venetian terrazzo was chosen for the elevator hall.
