The present volume aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of digital transformation in the construction industry, with a particular focus on the evolution of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). It explores the process that led to the adoption of BIM as a "process" and the emergence of Heritage BIM (HBIM) in the context of the built heritage. The central importance of Drawing and graphic/ iconographic representations as effective communication tools for depicting complex scenarios, such as historical buildings, archaeological sites, and museums, is emphasized. Furthermore, the value of interoperability of digital models and the need to adopt interdisciplinary methodological approaches for conservation and restoration are highlighted. Processes that employ advanced digital modeling techniques, such as mesh and NURBS, are proposed, attributing an intellectual, historical, and cultural dimension to each generative phase of modeling, in addition to practical and mechanical considerations. The generative requirements to support the data acquisition process through 3D scanning and digital photogrammetry (Scan-to-BIM process) are also described, aiming to provide an accurate infographic representation of monuments and historical buildings. Finally, the enhancement of monuments, historical buildings, archaeological sites, and museums is promoted through the creation of interactive models, virtual tours, and digital reconstructions. Technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and web-XR (extended reality) are examined with the ultimate goal of offering engaging and immersive experiences to visitors, allowing them to explore the tangible and intangible values of the built heritage.

Ricercatore presso il dipartimento di Architettura, Ingegneria delle Costruzioni e Ambiente Costruito del Politecnico di Milano, dal 2013 svolge attività di ricerca nei campi Virtual Heritage, Building Information Modelling (BIM), rilievo 3D, Scan-to-BIM, extended reality (XR) e virtual museum. Nel 2016, il Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) ha finanziato la sua attività di ricerca attraverso il programma di formazione New Paradigm / New Tools For Architectural Heritage presso i centri di ricerca Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) lab – Carleton University di Ottawa e presso Autodesk Research Toronto, Ontario (Canada). Dopo un anno di esperienza internazionale ha completato il dottorato multidisciplinare cum laude e ha vinto il premio Sifet 2018 come miglior tesi a livello nazionale. Autore di oltre 80 articoli su riviste scientifiche nazionali e internazionali e atti di convegno, attualmente è docente presso la scuola di Architettura Urbanistica Ingegneria delle Costruzioni (AUIC), la Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici (SBAPP), la scuola di dottorato del Dipartimento di Architettura, Ingegneria delle Costruzioni e Ambiente Costruito (ABC), il master BIM di II livello del Politecnico di Milano, l’Università di Trento e collabora come docente presso il Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC) della Ku Leuven all‘interno del Archdoc Workshop (Architectural Heritage Documentation for Conservation & Virtual Palace Workshop). Attualmente svolge attività di ricerca presso il Dip. ABC del Politecnico di Milano, collaborando con diversi enti pubblici e centri di ricerca nazionali e internazionali nel campo della digitalizzazione del patrimonio costruito ed è socio ordinario dell’Unione Italiana del Disegno (UID)
