Founded in 1984 in Milan and with a second office in Munich, Matteo Thun & Partners has distinguished itself through its ability to combine respect for the genius loci – the spirit of place – with modern design techniques. Thun’s projects are recognized for their ability to blend interior design, architecture, and nature – an approach that the studio calls "botanical architecture".

In practice, this involves the use of natural materials, such as stone and wood, and the design of large green areas, both indoor and outdoor. This approach not only lets built spaces to “breathe,” but also celebrates the natural rhythm and form of the environment, promoting a deeper connection between humans and nature.

One of the studio’s key strategies is “Three Zeros”: Zero Kilometers, Zero CO2, Zero Waste. This takes the form of using local materials to minimize transport, efficient energy management to reduce carbon emissions, and a materials lifecycle policy that promotes recycling. These principles not only translate into sustainability, but also into a design that regenerates and offers an alternative to the complexity of current environmental certifications.

Another distinctive feature of Thun’s work is its focus on the tactile and sensorial aspects of spaces. “HiTouch + Sensoriality” involves a preference for organic materials, since they can speak to all the senses, imparting beauty, intimacy, and sensoriality without sacrificing functionality. This approach helps promote healthy, sustainable lifestyles – a model that the study defines as “healthy living". Every project aims to promote physical and mental wellbeing, encouraging a balanced, harmonious relationship between humans and their environment.

With a team of 80 architects and designers, Matteo Thun & Partners is involved in numerous sectors with an approach tailored towards simplification and the creation of timeless, durable, and elegant architecture.

The firm’s commitment to innovation and sustainability will be the focus of the next webinar in the series, scheduled for June 27, 2024.
