In vista dell’evento che si terrà dal 30 novembre al 2 dicembre a Lisbona, Portogallo, World Architecture Festival ha annunciato i finalisti degli Special Prize, che passano allo step successivo del premio. I vincitori verranno annunciati alla cena di gala.
Ogni anno questi premi speciali celebrano l’utilizzo creativo e caratteristico di sistemi, tecnologie o materiali: combinazione di architettura e ingegneria, colore, luce naturale e legno certificato PEFC, oltre a un premio per il miglior edificio di piccole dimensioni. Quest’anno sono stati inaugurati inoltre due premi: The Futureglass Prize e The Royal Fine Art Commission Trust International Building Beauty Prize, che andrà a un edificio completato che “mette il buonumore” attraverso l’architettura.

Engineering Prize
Il prestigioso Engineering Prize viene selezionato da una giuria specializzata che celebra un progetto in cui architettura e ingegneria si fondono per dar vita a un design di qualità. I nove progetti finalisti possono contare su strutture raffinate e degne di nota, i cui sistemi e impianti migliorano l’esperienza dell’utente e forniscono soluzioni sostenibili in maniera ambiziosa:

- The St. Regis Chicago di Studio Gang
- Orange Village – Headquarters di Koffi & Diabaté Architectes
- Quay Quarter Tower di 3XN
- Secure Sanand di Studio SAAR
- Westfield Mall of the Netherlands di MVSA BV
- SoFi Stadium di HKS Architects
- Parkade of the Future di 5468796 Architecture + Kasian Architecture, Interior Design and Planning

Best Use of Colour Prize
Il Best Use of Colour Prize celebra l’utilizzo creativo del colore in architettura, sia negli spazi esterni che interni. Gli otto finalisti utilizzano colori sgargianti e ben visibili per catturare l’occhio dell’utente, come segnaletica o anche per creare spazi vivaci:

Best Use of Natural Light Prize
Il Best Use of Natural Light Prize riconosce il migliore utilizzo della luce naturale in edifici completati, in particolar modo per migliorare il benessere fisico e mentale dell’utente, nonché le sue performance. Gli otto finalisti sono spazi pubblici e semi-pubblici, progettati per sfruttare al massimo la luce del giorno affinché dialoghi con il contesto e crei spazi dinamici per i visitatori:

- University of Warwick Faculty of Arts di Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
- Jakoba Mulderhuis di Powerhouse Company
- Dobra 55: The Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics building di Kuryłowicz & Associates

Best Use of Certified Timber Prize
Supportato dal Programma per il mutuo riconoscimento degli schemi di certificazione forestale (PEFC), questo premio viene attribuito, da una giuria speciale composta anche da un rappresentate di PEFC, a un progetto che utilizza legno certificato in maniera innovativa, educativa o artistica. Gli otto progetti in corsa spaziano dalle più ampi strutture a edifici più piccoli in legno che riflettono la cultura locale tramite l’utilizzo di materiali tradizionali dimostrando che il legno può essere il materiale adatto anche nei processi costruttivi più moderni:

Small Project of the Year Prize
Lo Small Project of the Year Prize viene attrobuito al miglior progetto completato di scala ridotta rispetto alla sua tipologia. Questi progetti rappresentano la creatività e ingegno degli architetti nel progettare con parametri ridotti. Il premio celebra progetti di piccole dimensioni, ma di grande innovazione:

The Futureglass Prize
Il Futureglass Prize include progetti completati e futuri che dimostrano nuove, innovative modalità di utilizzo del vetro e della tecnologia del vetro. I finalisti di questa prima edizione del premio spaziano da edifici con pannelli vetrati camaleontici a progetti innovativi di inserimento del vetro in strutture esistenti:
